A Clean Slate
I have often been asked about how one should go about starting over....whether it be rebranding, establishing a new business or career, or just getting back out there in the world. Suffice it to say, I have all kinds of ideas, but I never actually put them into practice for myself. It all sort of happens when you "HAVE" to do something. So here are some suggestions on how to start "getting started."
First - be ready. If you are not in a mental and emotional place to begin something, that means you haven't let something go. We only have enough space for so many things - family, friends, hobbies, church, clubs, work. And if you are holding on to something from the past, you won't be ready to embrace something new. So as Elsa says, "LET IT GO!"
Next - have some kind of game plan in place. That means either get involved in something that will get you "out there" if you don't already or if you do, get out there!!! Friends and family are the best at helping you, and don't be afraid to ask for their help. Social gatherings, volunteering, taking a class are all ways to let people know that you are ready, willing and able to put your new game plan into play!
Third - be prepared. Make sure your resumes (yes, plural) are ready to send out, as well as cover letter(s). Starting a company? Create your brand and order business cards. A website and other social media sites may take a little while to establish, but a business card goes a long way.
And finally (for this short list) - be patient. I have learned, and am learning the hard way. Looking for a position or starting a career or establishing a business is time consuming and frustrating. You will experience every negative emotion that there is, and self-doubt and worry will consume you. So take number 2 and use "getting out there" as a way to keep from crawling in a hole, hiding in your bed, or worse yet, giving up.
I have rediscovered what gives me pleasure, and I am pursuing a career that gives me pleasure AND pays the bills! So know that you are not alone. There is an entire population of us out here. So let's symbolically hold hands, give a squeeze, and remind each other that we it's OK to move on from the past, begin with a clean slate, and find our pleasure!
